Wildcat Gap Pilot Site
Bald Eagle State Forest

A fall 2000 cleanup has helped restore the beauty of Long Mountain and improve the quality of a stream in the Bald Eagle State Forest.

Centre County CleanupContractors Gary Fronk Excavating and Kramer Recycling removed just over four tons of trash for proper disposal, including 103 tires, and recycled almost 4.5 tons of scrap metal from the Wildcat Gap site. The cleanup took place during the last week of September, enhancing the beauty of the area in time for visitors to enjoy the peak of the fall foliage season.

The solid waste authorities of Clinton and Centre counties provided assistance and proper disposal for the trash, and personnel from Bald Eagle State Forest and Penn Nursery also assisted. The contractors used heavy equipment to pull the trash from a ravine. It is estimated the site was used as an illegal dump site for 70 years.

More than one-third of the Bald Eagle State Forest is part of a municipal watershed which provides drinking water to nearby communities.

Bald Eagle State Forest, located in Centre, Mifflin, Snyder, and Union counties in Central Pennsylvania, has more than 300 miles of forestry roads and trails used by hunters, hikers, snowmobilers, and others. Wildcat Gap is located in Gregg Township, Centre County.

The site is one of ten pilot sites cleaned during 2000. Learn about other illegal dump sites in state forests and parks.
