In preparation for development of the park in the fall of 2002, volunteers teamed up to move massive amounts of trash from the park, followed by a week of work by contractors.
As a result of the efforts, nearly 100 tons of trash and scrap metal, over 1,100 tires and 75 cubic yards of concrete were taken from the public lands for recycling and proper disposal. Among the 175 volunteers donating 700 hours of labor on two cleanup days, March 9 and March 16, were members of the Benjamin Rush Community Gardens, DeSalle Vocational School, Benjamin Rush Lighthouse Soccer, and Philadelphia Police Recruit Class. Demonstrating team spirit and cooperation, the volunteers collected 8.6 tons of trash that were properly disposed by Waste Management of Philadelphia. Wava Inc. donated trash bags for the event.
On April 10, another 69 volunteers gathered 10.5 tons of trash. Wheelabrator Waste Management donated hauling and disposal.
Enviro-Air Technologies of Coopersburg served as the lead contractor in the park from April 17 to May 24. A total of 48 tons of trash were collected and disposed by Onyx/Superior Waste Services of Norristown; 11 tons of tires were taken by Carbon Service Corp. for recycling; 26 tons of refrigerators and scrap metal were recycled by Morris Iron and Steel Co. Inc.; and the concrete was handled by Academy Recycling.
Following the cleanup, the contractor graded and seeded the disturbed areas.
These cleanups followed a late Fall 2001 cleanup and precede additional work to be done in the Fall of 2002.
