The drive along Julian Pike in Moshannon State Forest is now a natural experience, thanks to the efforts of volunteers from the Clearwater Conservancy who were assisted in organizing a May 4, 2002, cleanup by PA CleanWays Field Specialist David Thomas.
Donating 33 hours of labor, eleven volunteers made quick work of more than two tons of trash and 50 tires, assisted by forestry staff who provided a truck with a winch, a dump truck, and backhoe. Two local residents also donated a truck with a winch. The trash was taken to the Centre County Solid Waste Authority in Bellefonte for proper disposal, and the authority also recycled nearly two tons of scrap metal.
PennDOT helped restrict access to the site by mounding dirt after installing a culvert pipe. They also seeded and mulched the area.
DCNR encourages Centre County residents with disposal and recycling questions to contact Centre County Recycling Coordinator Joanne Shafer at 814-238-6649 or by e-mail.
Moshannon State Forest attracts hunters, anglers, mountain bikers, hikers, picnickers, sightseers, horseback riders, cross-country skiers, and motorized recreational vehicle users. Older trail systems have been upgraded and new trails constructed to accommodate the forest users.
The forest, located in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River Watershed, contains three state parks: Parker Dam State Park, S.B. Elliott State Park, and Black Moshannon State Park. The origin of the name Moshannon is derived from an Indian word meaning "moose stream."
