Workers at Laurel Run Road
Laurel Run Road, Wildcat Trail
Tuscarora State Forest

The Wildcat Trail area along Laurel Run Road in the Tuscarora State Forest was transformed from an eyesore back to its natural state during an equipment cleanup conducted April 1 to 3, 2002, in Toboyne Township, Perry County.

Cleanup TeamThe hardworking crew getting the job done was Gary Fronk Excavating of Thompsontown. The workers removed much of the trash manually from the extremely steep slope, placing it in four-cubic-foot bags which were then lifted by a crane to containers and trucks.

Before & AfterThe trash consisted of daily household waste, bulky furniture items, and construction and demolition debris. The cleanup netted four tons of trash, taken by Harrisburg Hauling to the Cumberland County Landfill in Newburg. A ton of scrap metal was also removed and taken to Kramer's Recycling in McAlisterville.

Skidder With TiresIn addition, tires were removed after a trail was cleared for access, then lifted 25 at a time by a logging skidder. Destination for the 887 tires was Mahantango Tire Recycling in Liverpool. Following the cleanup, five truckloads of soil were placed across the front of the site. District Forester Jim Foose commented that the site looked "great" when the work was completed.

DCNR encourages County residents with disposal and recycling questions to contact Perry County Recycling Coordinator Mary Lou Moyer at (717) 582-8988 or by e-mail.

Comprised of 91,165 acres, the Tuscarora State Forest is located in Cumberland, Franklin, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, and Perry counties. The forest offers hunting, trout fishing, boating along the Juniata River, picnicking in the Karl B. Guss State Forest Picnic Area in west Juniata County, and 100 miles of snowmobile trails. In addition, the Tuscarora Trail offers 23 miles of hiking as part of the Appalachian Trail system. Sightseers on the forest's 157 miles of road occasionally see bears and bobcats, as well as other wildlife.
