Local municipal officials joined with Buchanan State Forest employees, the Bedford County Chapter of PA CleanWays and local volunteers to return a section of Ray's Cove Road to its natural beauty in a two-day cleanup November 8 and 9, 2002.
East Providence Township provided equipment and manpower to assist forestry personnel and PA CleanWays staff to pull appliances, bulky furniture items and large truck tires from a steep embankment the first day. Township supervisors used their backhoe with chains to hoist the heavy items up to the narrow forestry road where they were placed in a dump truck and then hauled to a roll-off box.
On the second day, volunteers from the Bedford County Chapter of PA CleanWays were joined by youth from the Bedford County Probation Department and township employees to complete the cleanup. They worked all morning to remove tires and bag trash, placing them along the road for loading into a pickup truck which then hauled them to the roll-off container.
Roll-Off Container Service of Osterburg was contracted for the roll-off box, and disposal of the 3.75 tons of trash was donated by Waste Management Shade Landfill of Cairnbrook, Somerset County. The cleanup yielded 85 tires taken to Penn Turf Inc. of Hollidaysburg. Sanitary facilities were provided by Jake Hoover's Septic Cleaning of Bedford, and lunch was purchased from the Original Italian Pizza of Everett for the volunteers.
"Thanks to the efforts of the volunteers and the cooperation of the township, we made a tremendous visual improvement to the area," Buchanan District Forester Jim Smith said. "We appreciate the effort of the community in addressing the problem of forest dumping."
The site is located ten miles north of Breezewood.
