Murphy Estate Volunteers
Murphy Estate
Sproul State Forest

Despite a morning rain and intermittent showers, 41 volunteers tackled 13 tons of trash, on April 20, 2002, removing it from Murphy Estate along Stony Run in Leidy Township, Clinton County.

Cleanup TeamThe effort was coordinated by the Clinton County Chapter of PA CleanWays.

The site, located northwest of Renovo, consisted of discarded furniture, glass and plastic containers, metal cans, construction debris, household refuse, appliances, and 50 tires.

Caring YouthTwo student groups from Bucktail High School, under the direction of Laura Hendricks, were particularly enthusiastic since it was rumored there may be some extra credit for their work. Keeping in the spirit of community service were the Woolrich Lions Club volunteers.

Pickin' Up TrashAlso represented were the Rocky Mt. Elk Foundation of Clinton County. Their interest is a clean and aesthetically looking environment for tourists and hunters who come into the area hoping to see the growing elk herd.

Trout Unlimited of Clinton County and the Beech Creek Watershed Association provided volunteers who also are dedicated to clean streams and a presentable natural environment.

A Happy WorkerThe groups worked from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Lunch was provided by Sheetz of Mill Hall, and drinks were provided by the Clinton County Chapter of PA CleanWays. Sproul State Forest provided trucking and a front-end loader to load the trash for proper disposal. Each person left the day's activity knowing they did their part to improve the forest.

DCNR encourages Clinton County residents with disposal and recycling questions to contact Michael Crist, recycling coordinator, at 570-769-7802 or by e-mail.

Sproul State Forest is located in western Clinton and northern Centre counties, containing 293,000 acres of forestland. The forest is named in honor of William C. Sproul, governor of Pennsylvania from 1919 to 1923.
