Local residents of two small towns in Centre County joined with civic groups and government representatives to rid their area of more than 12.5 tons of illegally dumped trash in Sproul State Forest on October 26, 2002. The former railroad bed between the towns of Orviston and Monument in Curtin Township was their focus.
Altogether, 60 volunteers donated 300 hours of labor for the massive cleanup effort. Groups represented included Clinton County Chapter of PA Cleanways, Beech Creek Watershed Association, Central PA ATV Association, Lock Haven University Biology Club, the Centre County Solid Waste Authority, Centre County Conservation District, and Clinton County Correctional Facility.
As a result of their efforts, 8.34 tons of trash, 4.28 tons of scrap metal and other recyclables and 900 tires were removed from the forest. The site is parallel to Beech Creek.
Waste Management donated all disposal costs. The Centre County Solid Waste Authority donated hauling and roll-off
containers and John Glenn Sanitation provided hauling and rolloffs at a
reduced rate. The Orviston Bible Church and Curtin Township Supervisors provided parking.
Brothers Pizza of Beech Creek provided lunch for the hungry workers.
Roll-off containers and recycling containers were placed at the church parking lot. Volunteers spread out along the area, separated and bagged recyclables and trash. Sproul State Forest employees drove the length of the old rail bed, collected all items, and transported them to the loading area, where scrap, recyclables, and trash were sorted and placed in the appropriate roll-off containers. Two sections of the steep bank above the rail bed will be cleaned in Spring 2003 with contracted equipment.
DCNR encourages Centre County residents with disposal and recycling questions to contact Centre County Recycling Coordinator Joanne Shafer at 814-238-6649 or by e-mail.
Sproul State Forest is located in western Clinton and northern Centre counties, containing 293,000 acres of forestland. The forest is named in honor of William C. Sproul, governor of Pennsylvania from 1919 to 1923.
