Trough Creek Drive
Rothrock State Forest

A Huntingdon County dump site was transformed back to its natural state in Rothrock State Forest during a contracted cleanup April 6, 2002 coordinated by the Huntingdon County Chapter of PA CleanWays.

Headed UphillVehicle parts, an appliance, bulky furniture items, and discarded concrete and beer bottles and cans littered the steep hillside at the Todd Township location. Park's Garbage Service Inc. of Huntingdon used equipment to pull just over a ton of trash up to the road and then hauled it to Park's Transfer and Recycling and WSI Sandy Creek Landfill in Hopewell, Bedford County.

The trash polluted the area, located upstream from Trough Creek and Raystown Lake, a recreational boating and fishing area.

DCNR encourages Huntingdon County residents with disposal and recycling questions to contact the Huntingdon County Recycling Coordinator Lou Ann Shontz at 814-643-8192 or by e-mail.

Rothrock State Forest has four state parks among its acreage. Among them is Trough Creek State Park, a 541-acre park was carved from the former Paradise Iron Furnace Company tract located in the Rothrock State Forest. The Civilian Conservation Corps was responsible for its construction. Featured attractions include a large balanced rock, an ice mine, and remnants of the Paradise Iron Furnace. There is a small tent camping area within the park and several hiking trails.
