Kirby Road
Forbes State Forest

Picking Up The TrashTons of trash were pulled from a steep, wooded slope along Kirby Road in Forbes State Forest, Wharton Township. Even though the former community dumpsite had been covered with a thick layer of soil and a guide rail installed, trash was still being dumped there. Articles illegally dumped in the area included tires, vehicle parts, deer carcasses, appliances, and household trash. The tires and other trash contained water that provided breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Working HardA crane was used to lift out large pieces of trash during the first phase of the cleanup in late October, 2003. A. P. Radomski Composting, provider of the crane service, removed tires, appliances, and other bulky items from the site. On November 1, volunteers hand-picked and bagged the remaining trash from the site. In addition to local residents, the work crew was comprised of Forbes State Forest personnel and members of the Fayette County Chapter of PA CleanWays. Volunteers donated a total of 22 hours to the project. Four Star Pizza of Hopwood, provided lunch for the volunteers.

Teamwork!Following the volunteer cleanup, DCNR's forestry employees backfilled the disturbed areas and planted grass seed.

DCNR encourages residents of Fayette County with questions on recycling and proper disposal to contact their Recycling Coordinator at (724) 430-4884.
