On October 4, 2003, 13
volunteers donated over 42 hours to clean up active illegal dumping areas
along Pine Ridge and Piney Creek Roads in Buchanan State Forest, Mann
Township. The group met at the Artemas
Community
Park before proceeding to the sites. In addition to local residents,
volunteers were comprised of the Bedford County Youth Probation and PA
CleanWays of Bedford County.
Articles illegally dumped
in the area included tires, daily trash, and numerous appliances and
other bulky items. The sites degraded the beauty and water quality of
Piney Creek.
A
total of 1.68 tons of trash was collected from Piney Creek and along
the roads. Roll Off Container Service of Osterburg provided hauling and
Dry Ridge Johns of Manns Choice provided sanitary facilities. WM-Shade
Landfill Inc. of Cairnbrook donated trash disposal and PA CleanWays of
Bedford County donated tire disposal.
