On
April 2, 2003 PA CleanWays partnered with Wharton Township and
DCNR personnel to remove tires, scrap metal for recycling, and
other bulky items from the steeply sloped site. Equipment was
used to pull heavy items up the steep bank. The following week,
volunteers worked along side Forbes State Forest and Wharton
Township personnel to clear the site of all remaining trash.
PA CleanWays
of Fayette County
helped
to organize the cleanup activities, which resulted in the
removal of 4.65 tons of trash, 153 tires, and the recycling
of a ton of scrap metal and appliances. Volunteers donated
a total of 15 hours to the project.

The dumpsite
was located in Forbes State Forest, Fayette County, along
Potter School Road in Wharton Township. The trash at the site
degraded Big Sandy Creek and tires and other trash contained
water, providing breeding sites for mosquitoes.
DCNR
encourages Fayette County residents with disposal and recycling
questions to contact the Fayette County Department of Solid
Waste Management at (724) 430-4884.
The
Forbes
State Forest includes six state parks and the state's
highest point at the Mt. Davis Natural Area, Somerset County.
Part of the forest is also located in Westmoreland County.
