On
October 18, 2003, trash was removed from an area along Sleepy Hollow
Trail, in the northern quadrant of Black Moshannon State Park, in Centre
County, Rush Township. Trash found along the park boundary trail included
tires, construction debris, glass bottles and cans, affecting the area
both aesthetically and environmentally.
Seven
volunteers donated a total of 21 hours to the project, removing 1.55
tons of trash. In addition to local residents, volunteers were comprised
of the Black Moshannon Snowmobile Club and PA CleanWays of Blair County.
Hauling services were
provided by John Glenn Sanitation of Philipsburg, disposal provided by
Centre County Solid Waste Authority of Bellefonte, and the Black Moshannon
Country Store in Philipsburg provided discounted volunteer lunches.
Sleepy
Hollow Trail runs through an area where trees killed by years of gypsy
moth defoliation had been harvested in 1984. New growth provides good
food and cover for turkey, deer and songbirds. With the trash removed,
the area has been returned to its natural state.
To ensure proper disposal
of waste, DCNR encourages residents of Centre County to contact their
Recycling Coordinator at (814) 238-6649.
