Look at all this Trash!!In conjunction with The Great Pennsylvania Cleanup, Saturday, April 24, 2004, a group of 35 volunteers spread out over the Sobers Run site and worked to clear the area of bottles, cans, daily trash, vehicle parts, glass, buckets, tires, and other debris.

The team loaded the bagged and gathered trash and a park truck shuttled it to the equestrian parking area, where volunteers loaded it into a rolloff. The group then carpooled to the Boulton Heritage Visitor Center, where they bagged and loaded the trash, gathered earlier in the week from the Jacobsburg Trail, into a second rolloff.

Loading the Truck with Trash

Volunteers worked for a total of 135 hours to remove over 4 tons of trash, 20 tires and 1500 pounds of scrap metal. Chrin Sanitary Landfill donated the rolloffs and the disposal costs.

After the cleanup, everyone enjoyed lunch on the grounds of the Visitor Center.

DCNR encourages Northampton County residents with questions about recycling or proper disposal to contact their county Recycling Coordinator at (610) 759-2600.

On the northern edge of the Lehigh Valley, the rolling terrain of Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center is near the foothills of the Pocono Plateau. A variety of habitats range from fields in various stages of successional growth to mature hardwood forests dominated by oak trees. About 2.5 miles of the beautiful Bushkill Creek and its tributary Sobers Run flow through the center.

Working TogetherJacobsburg was dedicated as an environmental education center in October 1985. The center has a variety of quality educational programs available to students as well as teachers. In addition to providing an excellent outdoor laboratory for environmental education and interpretation, the Center's natural resources give visitors a natural open space for year-round outdoor exercise and recreation such as hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, picnicking, and cross-country skiing.
