Buchanan State Forest

Illegal dumping had marred the natural beauty of Buchanan State Forest, which hunters and outdoor enthusiasts enjoy on a regular basis.

Picking up Trash on the HillsideOn Saturday, April 9, 2005, volunteers from the Fulton and Bedford County Juvenile Probation Offices, along with state forest personnel, worked with PA CleanWays, Inc. and PA CleanWays of Bedford County to clean up two inactive dumpsites. One site was along Akersville Road, in Fulton County, and the other was behind the Chaneysville Cove Elementary School along Chaneysville Cove Road, in Bedford County.

Before the Cleanup

The hard-working cleanup team scoured the areas, picking up over two tons of trash, including tires, old appliances and enough household trash to fill a 20-yard rolloff.

It Takes Two People to get the Bulky Items

DCNR encourages residents with questions about proper disposal or recycling in Bedford County to call Recycling Coordinator Regina Miller at 814-623-8099 or, in Fulton County, Recycling Coordinator Richard Wible at 717-485-3717.

The Buchanan State Forest was named in honor of James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States. It covers 75,000 acres in Bedford, Fulton, and Franklin Counties.

The Tuscarora Hiking Trail, covering a distance of 39 miles in the forest, follows the crest of Tuscarora Mountain, connecting with the Big Blue Trail near Hancock, Maryland.
