Bark Camp Road
Moshannon State Forest

More than 18 tons of trash were removed from Bark Camp Road during an equipment cleanup conducted the week of November 5, 2001, in Huston Township, Clearfield County.

Equipment Working Contractor Steve Petrini Excavating used a large backhoe to pull the trash from a steep slope. Scrap metal, including appliances and vehicle parts, amounted to 5.68 tons and was recycled by Murray K. Lilley Trucking, who also donated hauling. Twenty-five tires were also gathered for recycling. A total of 12.22 tons of trash were taken to Superior Greentree Landfill for proper disposal.

Cleanup TeamThe contractor also seeded and mulched the area upon completion. Because of the difficulty of the cleanup, volunteers were not involved.

The road got its name in reference to the practice of harvesting bark from hemlock trees in the area to cure hides.

Before the Cleanup

Moshannon State Forest is located in Clearfield, Elk, Cameron, Centre and Clinton counties. Popular with hunters and anglers, the forest is increasingly used for cross-country skiing, mountain biking, backpacking, horseback riding and motorized recreational activity. Trails have been improved in recent years and maps for specialty trails are available at the district office.
