Barrville Road
Rothrock State Forest

Forty volunteers removed more than two tons of trash from Barrville Road in Rothrock State Forest, Huntingdon and Mifflin Counties on November 10, 2001.

More than thirty tires, five appliances, and two tons of household trash were pulled off the slopes by the group of determined volunteers along the two-mile stretch of road connecting Huntingdon and Mifflin counties.

4-H Team MemberIn addition to local residents, volunteers were comprised of the Stone Valley 4-H Club, Friends of Greenwood Furnace State Park, Huntingdon County Juvenile Probation, members of the Huntingdon and Mifflin County Chapters of PA CleanWays, Sausman Insurance Agency, DCNR personnel, and Park's Garbage Service, Inc.

"We are extremely grateful to not only the volunteers who gave their time, but also to the many local businesses and agencies that donated to this cleanup," said Nichole Cook Monica, executive director of PA CleanWays of Huntingdon County and cleanup organizer.

Cleanup TeamDonors to the cleanup included Park's Garbage Service Inc., hauling and disposal; Sausman Insurance Agency, truck; 84 Lumber, gloves; Your Building Center, gloves; drinking water, Stricklers; lunch facility, Greenwood Furnace State Park; and lunch contributions, Stone Valley Pizzarene. Volunteers helping with the cleanup pledged to assist DCNR in monitoring the site to prevent further dumping.

Rothrock State Forest comprises more than 94,000 acres in Huntingdon, Centre, and Mifflin counties in Central Pennsylvania. Hunting and fishing are popular activities, and spectacular vistas are offered from atop Tussey Mountain. Additional activities are offered at four state parks located within the forest: Greenwood Furnace, Penn Roosevelt, Trough Creek, and Whipple Dam.
