Bendigo Volunteers

Bendigo State Park

Volunteers from across Elk County spent two days in late October 2000, cleaning up illegally dumped trash at Bendigo State Park. When all was said and done, 3.43 tons of garbage were hauled to Greentree Landfill; 29 tires were recycled; and another 1.18 tons of metals were taken to a local salvage dealer.

Cleanup TeamThe cleanup team included the Elk County PA CleanWays Chapter, park personnel, a prison crew from the federal correctional institution in McKean County, PA Game Commission employees, and volunteers. State Game Lands 25, the commonwealth's first state game lands, is adjacent to the park.

Others playing a part in the cleanup effort included Quality Towing and Empire Excavating, while Groll's Container Service provided roll-offs for trash and metals. Everyone involved did more than their fair share to ensure the roadway and dumps were cleaned of trash, litter, and tires.

Tires on ChainFollowing the event, a sign was placed near the park entrance, informing the public that the area had been cleaned by volunteers. Park Manager Len Strom monitors the sites on a regular basis.

Bendigo State Park is located in Elk County in northcentral Pennsylvania.
