The cleanup of Shippensburg Road on April 28, 2001, was spurred by interest from a resident of the area. Other area residents were among the 20 volunteers cleaning this and Stillhouse Hollow Road.
A stove, sofa and a few other larger items were winched up a 20 foot steep slope by a swivel winch donated by Dave's Trucking, Chambersburg. Volunteers removed other trash and picked up litter over a mile of road. Three pickup truckloads of trash, including carpet pulled from the stream, were hauled from the area at the gated haul road west of Milesburn Road.
One resident of the Big Flats area bagged litter along another one to two miles of road just prior to the cleanup. The Stillhouse Hollow cleanup was prioritized because of the interest of a nearby resident, a birder who drives the road regularly.
Volunteers from the Nature Conservancy were also particularly interested in this road, as they have a nearby preserve of a vernal pond on White Church Road. Volunteers picked up litter and trash from the forest boundary to the top of the hill, including the trash on a jeep trail near the road. Sheetz, Inc. of Shippensburg donated drinks for the volunteers.
Michaux State Forest is located in Cumberland, Franklin, and Adams Counties. It is comprised of 82,261 acres and is named in honor of Andre Michaux and his son, Francois Andre Michaux, the well-known French botanist.
The vast woodlands and natural areas are used by hunters, anglers, hikers, bikers, and picnickers. Hikers on the Appalachian Trail traverse about 40 miles through the forest.
