How Collected Penalties Are Used

Penalty money can be used in a variety of ways, depending on which agency collects fines. Fines cover court costs or go back to the agency that prosecuted the case. In other cases, fines may be used to fund special projects within the agency.

Half of the fines collected by the State Police go to local municipalities for costs, and half go to the State Police for statewide public education to promote litter control and recycling. DEP, Fish and Boat Commission and Game Commission each have special funds for collected fines.
