Camp owners no longer have to drive by numerous refrigerators and other trash cascading down the hill to get to their camps on Dry Run and Grugan Hollow Roads in Sproul State Forest, since 22 volunteers removed over five tons of trash from the sites in April 2000.
It was the frustration of one camp owner, David Turner, and his willingness to help, that led to these sites being chosen for a pilot cleanup. Other property owners and friends joined him and Sproul State Forest employees to winch the refrigerators, tires, and barrels up the steep slope of Dry Run Road, where they were loaded and trucked to a roll-off container for eventual recycling of the scrap metal and disposal of the remaining trash.
Dry Run Road is located in Chapman Township, Clinton County.
Energetic youth from the Concerned Treatment Center for Boys in Westfield, Pa., drove over two hours to help a nearby property owner and other volunteers bag and carry items up a rocky slope
on Grugan Hollow Road in Grugan Township, also in Clinton County. Their "reward" was hiking a half-mile up Grugan Run following the cleanup on the hill high above, hauling out tires that had rolled hundreds of feet down to the stream below.
It was a hot day, and the water was refreshing to those teen-agers, who then carried the tires out to the highway for proper disposal. After all that work, they really appreciated the sandwiches donated by the Sheetz store in Mill Hall!
Volunteers are continuing to monitor the sites for future dumping to prevent them from being trashed again. These cleanups are among ten pilot sites cleaned during 2000, the first year of the Pennsylvania Forest Lands Beautification Program. Learn about other cleaned sites or scheduled cleanups.
Sproul State Forest is located in Central Pennsylvania.
